Our Approach

President Clinton greets local farmers who grow cassava with assistance from the Clinton Hunter Development Initiative in Rwanda.

The Clinton Hunter Development Initiative applies the Clinton Foundation’s unique business approach to develop and implement programs that generate sustainable economic development in Africa. CHDI currently works in Rwanda and Malawi, at the invitation of these countries’ governments, to strengthen:

Agriculture

Approximately two-thirds of people in Africa rely on agriculture for survival. CHDI is helping farmers to access the tools—including fertilizer, seeds, and advanced farming techniques—to improve their harvests and market their goods. We are also working with local farmers to develop sustainable agribusinesses to strengthen local economies.

Clean Water and Sanitation

Diseases borne from dirty drinking water are the number one killer of young Africans today. CHDI is investing in infrastructure improvements that will help schools, hospitals and entire communities access clean water and sanitation systems.

Health Care Systems

More than two-thirds of Africans live in rural areas that lack quality health care facilities to treat and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS, malaria, tuberculosis, and other illnesses. CHDI is addressing this challenge in partnership with governments, NGOs, and communities by building rural health care facilities and programs that improve the availability and quality of care.

During the planting season in Fall 2006, CHDI assisted in the distribution of 97 tons of maize seed, 5.7 million cuttings of disease-resistant cassava, and 145 tons of improved bean seeds to farmers in Rwinkwavu.
